Women should be paid the same wages, earn the same benefits and have the same opportunities as men. I will work hard to enact legislation to see to it that women realize the equal standing that they are due.

We must strengthen prohibitions against workplace discrimination, expand affordable child care opportunities, and deal appropriately with incidents of sexual assault in the military by enacting accountability measures that guarantee that women receive the absolute right to pursue their careers free of threat of harassment and assault.

Stopping domestic violence will be a major priority. I am in complete agreement with Joe Masters, Commissioner of the Dept. of Public Safety, when he says, "Every Alaskan needs to be safe and free from domestic violence and sexual assault." Yet, many areas of Alaska have the highest incident rates in the U.S. We must do a better job of addressing the violence and sexual assault crisis in Alaska. Better education and more adequate law enforcement in both urban and rural communities is a good start. Adequate state administrative response, including a greater numbers of forensic nurses, is a must. Culturally-sensitive prevention and treatment programs are needed in rural areas, particularly those off the road system, where access to courts and other means of intervention are not readily available and where isolation may make women feel powerless. Victimization is a cycle. We must have the courage to address these sensitive issues head-on if we are to ensure that Alaskans of all ages achieve positive life outcomes.

Women have the Right to Choose and that choice should not be legislated away. Whatever choice a woman makes is her right. Women have the right to choose the method of birth control they and their doctor feel is best. This should not be the prerogative of an employer or an employer's insurance plan.

I believe the goal that all persons can and should have equal right to become successful and exercise rights free of undue encumbrance is within reach. It will take work and diligence; yet, it is of utmost importance to both our sons and daughters that this be done. Having successful, accomplished female role models allow children to form a healthy outlook and respect for all. And once accomplished, lays a healthy groundwork that will be perpetuated for generations.
